Current Sea Ice Mid July 2010

My favorite sea ice site is working properly, or perhaps I tried the old address a couple of times.

Anyway, we are looking at a hugely broken up ice mass that is at least even with the loss experienced in 2007. The wind made a huge difference in the distribution in 2007 and that is not happening here. Yet the western portion is unpacked floes appearing to track currents. In fact the whole sheet is largely unpacked and optimizing melting.

Again the comparison chart shows the same erosion.

The Northwest Passage should open up. Lancaster will clear normally through august and the western end has already been cleared by winds and should also reopen with modest luck.
